" Style is how you see the world and how the world sees you. It isn’t today and it isn’t tomorrow; it isn’t a dress or a car or a shoe or a comment—it’s the cut of your sail as you cross this crazy, uncharted sea. Far ahead, legions of boats have already made the crossing—some grander, some more sleek—and still newer boats are always coming up behind you. Style is the manner in which you navigate your one remarkable voyage." - Carol Edgarian
We’ve had more than a few glorious days this winter. On a mild winter afternoon reminiscent of springtime the gentleman and I set off wandering.

There is no better respite from a frenetic start to the New Year. It’s an incredible privilege to have careers and causes that keep us stimulated; however we all need time to recharge. Sometimes, I have to remind myself of this.

And so, we set off for our quiet swath of city. When it comes to quiet places, Sutton Place tops our list. I adore that feeling of calm- those secluded little streets, well maintained parks and river views. The sheer joy of privacy… That bridge.

In my mind, this is the perfect backdrop to a conversation on style. Not style in the sartorial sense, but in those meaningful questions of how we want to live our lives.
Such beautiful words against beautiful photos. I'm definitely seeing style as part of my life. Seeing style more in the sense of a lifestyle not a momentary experience when you have a shiny coat or a pair of designer heels on...
ReplyDeleteVanisha @ Vanishas Life In...Australia- Hi Vanisha! Thank you! I think you and P do such a great job of cherishing those little moments. Style is such a part of every facet of life.
DeletePS- I can't wait to catch up on your blog this weekend. Work has been so crazy that I'm so behind on my blog reading.
I love Sutton Place. In grammar school I passed it often on the York Ave. bus on my way back from volunteer work. I would always imagine the residents frozen in time, like early 1900s a la Edith Wharton's House of Mirth, lol. Little pockets of quiet are so nice to stumble upon, especially in cities like NYC. I think that's what I love about Paris - little parks and cul-de-sacs are not hard to find.
ReplyDeletekoko // res pulchrae- Hi Koko! It's such a wonderful area. And one of our favorite walks and picnic spaces in good weather. It's so Edith Wharton/Henry James- just classic New York. You can't help but linger along and imagine all the stories. Can't wait for them to expand the park space next year.
DeleteIt's so true about Paris.
What a lovely post! I have had such a busy month - I think i need to find some quiet time to recharge. It's been a tremendously rewarding time, but after looking at your photographs I think I need to take five this weekend :)
ReplyDeleteAmmu- Hi Ammu! Thanks! I'm glad to hear that your year is off to a fabulous and productive start. This month has been utterly chaotic on the work front for me as well. I came back from holiday all rested only to have that quickly upended, but this year I have so much that I want to accomplish and I just found out that I received a significant promotion- so I'm checking things off the list, which feels good...
DeleteYou have to take 5 this weekend- you deserve it:)
Congratulations! That's great news - what a terrific start to the year!
DeleteAmmu- Thanks Ammu! You're so sweet. The year feels like it's off to a glorious start.
Deletethese are wonderful. can't wait to visit nyc again soon.
ReplyDeleteJoy- Thanks Joy! Yes, you have to get your NYC fix in!
Deletei have never been to this corner of the city! what inspiring words and photos. :)
ReplyDeletemiss sophie- Hi miss sophie! Thank you! You must get yourself there! It's honestly one of our favorite places to for a picnic or just walking around.
DeleteI owe you an email. Work and social obligations have been a bit crazy, but will try to catch up this weekend.
Such a a lovely post Lindsay, and I can tell why your surroundings reminded you of spring. I can't wait for that feeling to make it over to my side of the Atlantic :)
ReplyDeleteMaja H.- Hi Maja! Thank you! You're photos of your city in winter have definitely inspired me to be better about bring the camera out. Of course, no sooner than I posted this- it turned crazy cold. The coldest weather patterns we've had in 2 years. It's like 4 degrees when I wake up- so cold! I thought of you, because I don't know how you do it! But it's actually been a bit sunny which is one saving grace.
DeleteI can't wait for spring too:)
What a great post and such a great reminder. We all need to recharge and take pleasure in some quiet time!

Always Maylee- Maylee- Thank you! It's so true. Recharging and sleep are the two things I prioritize last, but they're important things to take pleasure in. Love me some quiet time;)

Alexandra- Hi Alexandra1 I know1 I'm obsessed with ivy walls.
DeleteSo beautifully written! Love the backdrop and glad you had a great time sharing with the gentleman!:)
ReplyDeleteEileen- Hi Eileen! Thank you! That's so kind. Hope you are had a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful words and so very true. I've always been intrigued by facades, especially ones adorned with repetitive fenestrations. Gazing at them, one cannot help but think of all the people and moments in history the building has seen. Imagine the stories it would tell if buildings could speak.

Jenee C.- Hi Jenee C.! Thank you! It's so funny how we know these things to be true and yet we have to remind ourselves.
DeleteI know exactly what you mean- I love looking at facades and entrance ways too. So much history. Prewar are my absolute favorites.
I love the Carol Edgarian quote! These photos are just amazing.
ReplyDeleteaspiringforever.blogspot.com
Tian- Thanks Tian! That quote is so lovely and exactly what I think about style.
DeleteYou're so right, Lindsay. Life has a way of making us feel like a guinea pig racing round and round in a wheel. In some ways, London is a little like NYC. I love that I live close to London which means I could nip over for an exciting day to enjoy the bright lights, hustle and bustle of the vibrant city but I also get to go home where the countryside is just minutes from my doorstep so I can recharge.
ReplyDeleteChocolate Cookies & Candies- Hi Marlene! Doesn't it? It sounds like you have the best of both worlds. The English countryside is just so lovely.
DeleteWonderful post and oh so true. We all need recharging from time to time [I am in dire need of one right now!] Very inspirational, thank you, Lindsay.
ReplyDelete♥ Victoria
Victoria- Thanks Victoria! It should be one of the simplest things, but sometimes we all need a reminder.
DeleteWow, what beautiful pictures and what a surprise New York neighbourhood, I don't think I ever made it there in my travels - it's so unlike the NYC that I remember! I think that privacy is one of those underrated aspects of life that we all take for granted... Every time I see a papparazzi shot I remind myself to be grateful for the fact that I can run down the street to get milk and not have it mean anything to anyone anywhere ever.
ReplyDeletexxx
hannah-rose- Hi hannah-rose! Hope you are enjoying ever moment of your travels! Yes, there are so many perfect little nooks and corners. It just means you need to come back! Ah... It's so true about privacy.
DeleteBeautiful pics...I agree sometimes simple pleasures like this (taking a walk in the neighbourhood) is much needed. Only thing is, it's really so tough to actually take the time to do something simple like this. Sigh..
ReplyDeleteMelody- Thank you! Yes, the simple pleasures really are the best. But it is so hard to find the time to do. I'm coming off of a work stretch that hasn't afforded any time for much of anything. Boo!
