Happy October!

My Personal Photo
Black Halo Dress and Chanel Necklace

Happy October and a new week begins... I hope you all had restful weekends. The first of October always signifies the start of benefit season. Getting all dressed up with the gentleman for a cause I support is one of my favorite things about fall. That being said there's a lot of hard work involved with making sure that these events are successful. Here I am en route to a meeting for one of the boards I'm on.

When it comes to shopping, I firmly believe that if you are nice to the sales assistants you encounter, they will take care of you. That goes for most things in life. This dress was set aside for me by a sales assistant at a boutique that I slip into from time to time. There's something really nice about shopping with someone who's familiar with your style. As soon as this dress came in it was tucked away until I happened to walk by the boutique. It's a great dress to throw on in the midst of a busy week. It's simple, elegant and refined.

I always appreciate a good detail and this dress has several. The deep plunging back is resolutely modern. The ruched three-quarter length sleeves balance the exposed back. The pleats and draping at the front are the structural details that I always find myself falling for. Most of all I like that I can move around freely in this dress. Who wants to be restricted their clothing choices?

Do I even have to tell you how excited I was to wear my necklace? So excited.

  1. Love the pleats at the front of the dress. And of course, your necklace!

  2. What a beautiful dress! You look amazing in it. You surely have a sharp eye for details. The back, especially, is such a great detail.

  3. I love the plunging back, I actually bought the same dress in two colors a few months ago partly because of the nice open back. It is a much more interesting place to show skin, after all :)

  4. Very flattering, and the bijou is to die for.

I had to cancel my trip this fall to NYC; I wanted to let you know so that you didn't feel like you needed to do a post on your city favorites, though I would still love to see one, just for a future trip.

  5. Ammu- Thanks! I love the pleats too. They really make the dress, I think. That day was so windy that I couldn’t capture the bow perfectly, but I’m very happy with the necklace.

Fleurette- Thank you! The subtle details really make garments feel special. I love a plunging back, especially when everything else is covered.

Maja Piraja- Thank you. I agree a plunging back is a much more interesting place to show skin. It’s understated and feels refined. I love the idea of buying the same dress in two colors. If something is perfect why not purchase more than one?

Jazzy E (hivenn)- You’re still reading! Thank you!

LuxeBytes- Thank you. There’s something that flatters everyone:)

I’m so sorry that you had to cancel your trip to NYC. Maybe you could do a trip this spring. Thank you for telling me, I was actually starting to work on this last night. Just wondering- do you think it would make sense to make it one big posts or have several posts (like a best unique date ideas, best boutiques, etc). Would love to hear feedback.

  6. I love the colour of that dress - it's almost like a pearl but not too shiny, so beautiful.

Lovely outfit as usual. And you are so right about sales assistants. I'm afraid I'm quite impatient with bad service when I know the person just isn't pulling his or her weight, because I used to be one and I know a slacker when I see one.

  7. You look lovely as always, and it's great to know that you're so involved with different causes. The dress is beautiful, and I love the pleated detailing in the front as well. Happy October to you, too! :)

  8. lin- Thank you, you are far too kind. I like that it’s a unique color, but still a neutral. The funny thing is I hesitated with the color at first. I wasn’t sure if it was flattering for my skin tone.

A boutique with good sales assistants makes all the difference. I like when a boutique takes the time to get to know the customer. I really dislike poor service or when I see someone who refuses to look in the back or be accommodating.

Rachel- Thank you! It’s interesting to see something pleated that isn’t a long skirt. It feels more unique. Yes, I think it’s very important to be involved with some sort of cause. Giving back is so important.

  9. Can I give you my opinion? I'd love a NYC category on your blog with several posts! I often find one big post a bit overwhelming.

  10. You look absolutely lovely, such a pretty dress. I agree that great sales assistants are very important. The sales assistants at my favourite store tuck away things for me all the time. They sell out on some things so quickly, so I'm glad they know what I like.

  11. Fleurette- Of course you can give your opinion:) I was thinking the same thing- there’s an endless amount of things that I love about NYC, so I think it’s best to break it up. I do love those NY Times articles on “36 hours in…” though.

Garderoben- You are so sweet, thank you. That’s so nice that you have that sort of relationship with your favorite boutiques. I know what you mean about sizes selling out. In this sense I think boutiques can really be competitive.

  12. Fantastic dress, you look amazing, love the color and I agree with you in the importance of moving around freely with a dress, I hate been uncomfortable with clothes.

  13. lunaday- Thank you:) Freedom and range of motion is so important. I know a lot of people think dresses are uncomfortable, but they don't have to be.

  15. I too love that the dress is not so fitted. it looks comfy and glam at the same time.

  16. Camille S.- You're too cute. Thank you! You always look chic as well:)

Rebecca-Thank you. You're so right about the dress not being too fitted. It's really challenging to find dresses that like this that aren't too tight and are of a decent length.

    The Chocolat- Thank you!

  17. I too love articles such as "36 hours in.." or "24 hours in..". I'm thinking of doing one about Oslo, London and Paris for a magazine who'd be interested in featuring my article.

  18. Beautiful dress! It fits really well. It so hard to find a structured dress like that fits well!

  19. Fleurette- You should go for it. It would be a very interesting read.

the line sheet- Thank you! You are so right about finding structured dresses that fit well. I feel like I'm fighting a loosing battle sometime.

  21. Joy- Aww... You're sweet, thank you. The details make all the difference.

  22. Lindsay, I think that a series on the best of NY would be best, rather than a single post. You could get more in depth with each category that way. Looking forward to whatever you end up choosing.

  23. LuxeBytes-I think that makes more sense too. Especially since I have so much to say on each category.

  25. Miss Sophie-Thank you, thank you. You’re right about the necklace finishing off the look and providing that little extra something.

Kindness and relationships really are everything.
