Return To Order

"Simplicity, good taste and grooming are the three fundamentals of good dressing…" Christian Dior

It's impossible to have a conversation about personal style without talking about grooming. Nothing makes me feel instantly pulled together quite like being well-groomed. For me, this means having my hair done often (some things are best left to professionals), the perfect manicure and pedicure, flawless/glowing skin and natural makeup. Let it be known that I firmly believe that beauty comes from within, but sometimes we all need a little help.

I'm the daughter of a beauty girl, which has informed my style immensely. Skincare takes precedence for my mother. Likewise, my biggest luxuries are moisturizers and spa worthy products that force me to take a few minutes to relax.

We've all fallen under the spell of Into the Gloss for beauty related frivolity. The voyeur in me; loves hearing about the products that accomplished and beautiful women keep on their top shelves. Truth be told, I rely on my mother's opinions before diving into new products or altering my routine. I relish Into the Gloss for organization ideas.

I like my beauty products, closet, desks and life neatly organized. I crave having all of my products in their rightful places. It's about simplicity and order. I can tell I've stumbled upon a top shelf that I'm going to love, when beauty products are meticulously arranged. It's comforting to know that even with my eyes closed I can find all of the items I need in an instant. Yes, I'm completely Type A

Hope you are all having a wonderful weekend.

  1. I've never heard about Into the Gloss until today. WOW - I must have been living under a rock, they have such nice photographs and articles! I have to be studying today, I fear those top shelves are going to be so tempting!

  2. Florina- Oh, you're funny. Yes, it can suck you in and I always feel like I'm doing something right when products I've been using forever are mentioned.

  3. I totally agree with you. I would like to make a bigger effort with my nails this year as I enjoy painting them. I have given up on my hair though. In the past I made resolutions to style my hair but in the end I only ever style it when I "go out" (eg. wedding or party). Day to day, it's either up or down... nothing special.

  4. catssaymeow- Oh I'm no good with nails. I have to get them done, but I admire people who can paint them neatly. Hair is SO hard. I don't like it too done either, but rely on a stylist to do it.

  5. Lindsay, first of all, I just want to say a big thank you for leaving one of the sweetest and most encouraging comment. Much appreciated!

I read Into The Gloss until a few months ago when I realized I wanted to buy EVERYTHING these stunning ladies recommend. For the sake of my bank account, I only allow myself to take a peek every now and then.

  6. Chocolate, Cookies & Candies- I still can't get your words out of my head. So poignant. I think it broke my heart a little.

So many people say that they read Into the Gloss and then binge on buying products. I'm lucky because I usually get a hold of fancy products that are thrown into gift bags or from work sales (where they're basically free). I've gotten spoiled;)

  7. I've never been a big fan of beauty blogs. I have my own system down pat so I don't need them! I organize my makeup by keeping the products I use daily in a makeup bag, and the rest in a mini 3 drawer chest, with 1 drawer each dedicated to lips, face, and eyes.

  8. Lindsay,

    I am a huge fan of cosmetic products! So glad you reminded me of Into the Gloss, although my wallet may not thank you. I do agree that beauty comes from within, but it also starts with a foundation of good skincare. Would you mind sharing which moisturizer you are loving at the moment? {Currently, I'm using Tata Harper skincare bc I wanted to try something natural but with a little more oomph than the other natural products available. I need all the help I can get!}

Thanks for the sweet comments! And I'm so glad that I could post a pic with your stylish friend Guerre in the background!

    xo, sam

  9. Rebecca- That's great!!!

I would say I'm the same way. I've washed my face with the same product since I was baby and yet I love hearing people like Sally Singer speak about beauty. I love how candid people are about something so private. And i love getting ideas for my vanity.

  10. Okay... I absolutely LOVE your blog. Wow. And being a ballerina, I adore that post below. Have you found a copy. As of now, I am on the search too. :) I can't wait to read more. P.S. I am the exact same way about having my things neatly organized. I could do my daily routine with my eyes closed too. Are we crazy? Possibly. ha ha.

  11. I love ITG! And I enjoy looking well-groomed - glowing skin, a touch of make-up (either meticulously lined eyes or red lips) and clean nails do it for me. And of course, a great haircut.

That said, I love letting go when I am out of the city. Just returned from an amazing vacation in Goa, where my day look essentially involved sunscreen, lip balm and leave-in conditioner. I figure, if I feel beautiful (amid the sea, sand, and with my loved ones for company) that's good enough for me. The mutual adoring attention from my two baby nephews also helps :)

  12. Samantha- I love cosmetics too. It just feels really good to take care and pamper yourself.

I agree, the foundation of beauty is good skincare. Oh I do like Tata Harper products and her philosophy. For moisture I like Mario Badescu's Moisture Magnet for day and Gingseng Moist Creme (when it's cold and windy). I also like La Roche-Posay and Embryolisse. It just depends on the time of year. I was really tempted to start using La Mer and SK II at night, but it really seems a bit premature at this point.

Oh my gosh- yes, he's so stylish and sweet. I love how he's always in the background. Too funny.

  13. the lovebirds- Aww... That's so sweet. Thank you!

No I haven't found a copy. I'm still on the look out.

Oh we are crazy, but the good kind;)

  14. My favourite groonming habit is getting my hair cut, and my brows threaded. I don't wear make up, so my brows are really important!

  15. Ammu- There's nothing like glowing skin. So pretty with just a touch of makeup.

There is something nice about letting go, especially when you leave the city behind. Goa sounds amazing and I love the idea of just using sunscreen, lip balm and conditioner by the sea. The less products the better in that situation.

Oh yes there's nothing like happiness and a little relaxation to make you feel beautiful. My goodness the baby nephews sound absolutely adorable.

  16. Thank you for introducing me to Into the Gloss! I already have a huge craving for beauty products - I desperately need a few new makeup brushes - so this might be tempting fate, but I am going to have a good snoop around the site nonetheless.

I don't often get professionally "groomed", but I love to paint my nails, wear makeup, and make sure my brows are in order. I shape them myself, but I get complimented on them whenever I get my makeup done so I must be doing something right :)

  17. I've never been a big beauty person, but I do find a healthy skin and body very important. I should take your lead though and be more organized with my facial products though :)

  18. I love keeping everything neat and tidy, that includes my make up which is sparse. I store my brushes, mascaras and pencils in a glass and my blush, concealer, eye shadows and lipsticks in a bowl. I prefer to see this this things instead of having them drawer so I love these pictures from into the gloss...

  19. Lin- Yes! Brows are so important. They completely can change your face.

I nearly had a mishap over Christmas so I can't begin to talk about eyebrows. I started typing this post and mentioned them, but I couldn't because I'm still not over it.

  20. Very funny! I also like to see these things in order. There's nothing wrong with that!

  21. Maja H- Haha! Warning- the voyeurism is addicting;)

There's nothing like a good makeup brush. It really makes applying makeup so much easier and they're so pretty to display.

I admire anyone who can do their own brows. You are doing something right when you get compliments on them. Wow, I'm impressed:)

  22. CamisaBlanca - Healthy skin and body inside and out is so important.

    Organized facial products= LOVE

  23. lunaday- There's something so nice about keeping things neat and tidy. I find that it allows me to focus.

There's something really nice about being able to see everything.

  24. Alice Olive- It is funny. I love how there are others that feel similarly:)

You're so right. There's nothing wrong with that.

  25. My oh My! I do love me a silver cup of brushes! I think I'm type A positive [trying to be more optimistic in 2012, har har].

I only just started wearing make-up at the ripe age of 32, and well, it's been interesting...I'm working on mastering a look that doesn't have me looking like I applied Sharpie to my eyelids in a dune buggy at 4 in the morning. I more or less adore the shades that Dior puts together, AND the functional and fun compacts they come in--I've often thought of using them for a paint palette instead, but they are so lovely on the lids when I get it right!

Long story short: Once I decided to become "a math person" through a lot of studying and hard work, and it paid off. I suppose the same could happen with cosmetics. It's a grand universe to explore, I'm sure I'll get the hang of it [practice makes perfect?]. Happy New Year!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Speck- Happy New Year to you too.

The silver cup of brushes is so pretty.

Oh you're funny. Especially the dune buggy bit. It's never too late and I keep hearing that your 30s is when you settle into your style.

    And yes, practice makes perfect!

  27. Lucija- I know!!! They're so pretty!

  28. Jessie- I know right? It's so easy to do and relatively inexpensive, but still so organized. I love it:)
