Wanderlust

Last Saturday, the gentleman and I went to see Bonjour Tristesse at Film Forum (now playing until May 24th- having been extended twice). We rarely find ourselves still, so an afternoon at the movies seems quite decadent. These days, catching up on movies tends to happen only on long-haul flights.

I can’t think of a better film to countdown the days until summer. Having read Bonjour Tristesse, I’m constantly enthralled by the beautiful cinematic language Francoise Sagan used to describe the te d'Azur. The gorgeous expanses of the French Rivera never disappoint.

The gentleman and I have been having such wanderlust for warm days spent by the sea. Traveling from town to town (and a few lesser known islands), sailing, playing tennis, visiting boutiques and markets and reading on the beach. I have in no way mastered “the art of just being”, but a trip like this is a step in the right direction.

On a sartorial note, Jean Seberg’s Cecile was dressed perfectly for a carefree vacation. Modest swimsuits (I love this Chanel swimsuit for a splurge), boatneck tunics, chambray shirts, striped shirts, white pants, high waisted shorts* and a little black dress for evenings out, is all one needs in the carry on.  After all, isn’t planning for a trip part of the fun?

*I’m slowly coming around to the idea of shorts.

  1. I just posted holiday inspiration too. These images are lovely, very charming and chic, although the high-waisted shorts are too much of a challenge for me.

    1. lin- Holiday inspiration is the best kind. I found all of the clothing in the film so charming, chic, simple and real. Perfect for lounging around. I don't own any shorts and don't feel compelled to own any, but I like the idea of them. Especially when a trip to the south of France involves lots of physical activity.

  2. I am so ready for the beach as well....Love the images, perfect inspiration for summer. Shorts are a must in Madrid in the summer, high waisted are coming back but I am not sure if I will go for them.

    1. lunaday- Summer still feels so distant with lots more to do before it's time to enjoy carefree days.

I love how timeless all of these looks are. I don't ever think I'll ever be a shorts girl. I don't find them that much cooler than an airy dress or skirt, but I do find it inspiring when they're worn properly.

  3. Such lovely snapshots. Must watch this film :)
I hear you about the difficulty of doing nothing - took my father out for his birthday recently and he said, very sweetly - "I'm very proud of everything you have accomplished, but you haven't mastered the art of doing nothing." Working on it! Trying to be more meditative on a daily basis. Good weather helps as does getting enough sleep and keeping the caffeine/sugar intake under control.

    1. Ammu- It's so difficult to just do nothing, especially when you have lots of things that you want to accomplish.

Aww... What a sweet moment between father and daughter. You are so accomplished, my dear:)

I find the idea of becoming more meditative a good step in the right direction. I'm horrible about getting enough sleep- three hours does it for me, but I should work on that. Cutting down on caffeine and sugar is always good.

  4. I also love Jean's hair. So chic. Yes, planning for a trip is definitely part of my fun, and so is packing as capsule a wardrobe as possible. The 'art of bringing nothing' is also worth mastering for me!

    1. Alice Olive- Oh my goodness her hair cut could be a post all by itself. It's just so chic, timeless and youthful- love it.

I know exactly what you mean. I'm always fearful of being cold (regardless of the season) and tend to air on the side of packing more rather than less. Although there's something about the sea that always makes me crave less.

  5. Wardrobe planning is a very enjoyable part of traveling, well, anywhere! Preferably involving at least one Polyvore set and a list or two, just because ;)

We're not going anywhere overly exotic this year - Sweden is about the furthest we will travel, but hey, I have never been to Sweden and I hear their summer weather is a lot better than ours, so I am really looking forward to it :)

    1. Maja H- Agreed. It's so fun to visualize different wardrobe choices for trips and events. Oh and you know I share the love for a good list.

My friend was just in Sweden and LOVED it. I find summer travel (far or near) to be such a lovely change of pace. I can't wait to see pictures from your trip:)

  6. I can't say enough how much I love your blog- you have great taste. Oh and you just might be one of very few people who would look wonderful in a pair of high-waisted shorts.

  7. Lindsay, I think you will look fabulous in shorts, particularly high waisted shorts as mentioned by Anon. I still love this era where modest 3 quarter sleeved tops are paired with capri pants. I still remember the trip hubby and I had along the Cote d'Azur. We hopped from town to town and explored as much as we could. I used to wake up at the crack of dawn and wandered down to the nearest cafe where I'd sit, read and people watch until late morning.

    1. Chocolate, Cookies & Candies- Aww.... Thanks Marlene. That's so sweet of you.

I do love this era. I like how dignified and yet still relaxed the 3 quarter sleeves and capri pants- such a nice look.

That sounds like such a romantic trip. The people watching alone there is so amazing. I could sit for hours.

    1. Thea Vintage- I know! It's crazy to think that all these years later these looks still feel so right. This is everything I would want to wear on vacation too.

  10. I am the same way! Every summer I have to talk myself into liking shorts again!

Gonna have to see if this movie is on Netflix. I don't watch nearly enough vintage French films.
