If there's one thing I love, it's a good book. I grew up surrounded by books and reading everything I could get my hands on. To this day, I love bookstores and libraries. That new book smell is heaven. I enjoy collecting books and was very excited to add Balenciaga and Spain to my collection of fashion and style books. There's no better way to unwind after a long week, then with a good book.
I know I've mentioned how inspiring I found the Balenciaga and Spain exhibit and the resurgence of mid-century couture silhouettes, but this book continues to make me dream. I own a few wonderful books on Balenciaga, but Balenciaga and Spain really considers the rich Spanish heritage, culture and fine art that influenced so much of his designs. Since I enjoy this book so much, I'm giving away a copy to one lucky reader. You all have supported and inspired me so much over the past few months, and I thank each and every one of you for reading this wee little blog.

Oh that's so lovely *stares at pretty book*. I hope I win, so here goes... :)
ReplyDeleteI'm mostly inspired by Victorian literature. I grew up reading and loving books from the Bronte sisters, Jane Austen, Thomas Hardy, Charles Dickens just to name a few. To this day I'm still inspired by the charming decency of the women then: long flowy dresses, strict enough to cover, permissive enough to mesmerize, porcelain skin, long soft curls falling effortlessly from a chignon, all worn with an aura of elegance, that reisdes not only in garment, but in the etiquette, in motion and conversation. I'd love my clothing to reflect those attributes, I'd love to be like the glorious Shirley Keeldar, the virtuos Jane Eyre, thoughtful Elinor Dashwood, fragile and angelic as Caroline Helstone. Although women then were very constrained in the much detested social corset, they were very aware of their femininity, something that feminism has greatly deprived us of.
But enough with the daydreaming - wonderful post as ever and good luck to everyone entering the giveaway!
What a fantastic idea for a giveaway Lindsay! After Lin's post on the book some time back, I bought two copies, one for me and one for my best friend in Delhi. Truly inspiring. Hamish Bowles is such a treat to read, especially when he sinks his teeth into a subject as he does here. I won't enter the giveaway since I wouldn't want to deprive another reader of the chance to read this wonderful book, but I just wanted to comment and recommend it highly! It's very thoughtful of you to organise this.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely, generous gesture, I'm excited for whoever wins because I loved how inspiring and informative the book is, and I agree with Ammu, such a rare treat to have Hamish Bowles write at length and in detail. Good luck to everyone taking part in the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteFollowing you on blog lovin now. I love bookshops and the smell of new books too. This book looks beautiful. Colour is inspiring me sartorially at the moment. As the days get dull I am feeling the need for more of it my life. Xxxx
ReplyDeleteI saw the Balenciaga and Spain exhibit at the De Young museum in San Francisco last May. I thought it was breathtaking! After the exhibit, I got inspired AGAIN by the views from De Young. A few pics: http://tinyurl.com/d9jfc3p
ReplyDeleteThank you soooo much for this giveaway !
ReplyDeleteI'm inspired by so much things but people on blog inspired me sooo much !
I have been going insane for J.Crew lately -- am just mad for that bright orchid color they're offering this season. It goes so well with black and navy, the two foundation colors of my wardrobe. Other than that, I am eternally inspired by Coco Chanel and have been since I was 14 and began subscribing to Vogue.
ReplyDeleteI was in SF to see the Picasso and Balenciaga exhibitions at the De Young this summer -- and was decimated by a hideous stomach virus on the day we had tickets. I spent that day in the hotel either getting violent ill or sleeping it off. Horrible. So, I never did see what we came to San Francisco to see. Utterly disappointing.
Clean cuts and immaculate tailoring inspire me a lot sartorially. Two words: timeless classics. Thanks so much for the giveaway my dear.

I am most inspired sartorially by the timeless "prep culture" of New England. Thoughts of crisp fall days on a Boston campus, rowing on the Charles River, and summers on Cape Cod, while attired in Lacoste polos, Oxford button-down shirts, khakis, and classic Wayfarer sunglasses, always inspire my day-to-day style.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the great blog, Lindsay K!
Thank you so much for the giveaway and your lovely blog!
ReplyDeleteI find inspiration in people watching. Here in Europe my eyes follow clean lines and minimalism with a rock twist. A neutral pallete -white, black, light shades of blue/gray/pink- and soft, quality fabrics inspire me as well.
Have a great time while reading your book and good luck to all!
Oh how fun!I love your blog and am always inspired by your posts!
ReplyDeleteHere's my top five sartorial inspirations right now:
1. Léa Seydoux in The Beautiful Person.
2. Zelda Fitzgerald, especially as described by biographer Sally Cline.
3. The immaculately dressed gentlemen that stroll through the streets of Mayfair.
4. Stefano Pilati for YSL 2008.
5. Catherine Deneuve in La Chamade.
Thanks so much for stopping by my blog x
ReplyDeleteI'm much inspired by architecture. I have a penchant for garments with interesting structures. Pleats, folds, gathers and unique garment construction really float my boat...which is why I'm going a little gaga for that image with the woman in the black, voluminous gown. Wow!
Looks like a great book and I'd love to get my hands on it!! Thanks so much for hosting this giveaway.
Oh my :D I followed the link from your lovely comment and find A GIVEAWAY! *swoons*
ReplyDeleteBut as a first-time commenter, I feel a bit bad about taking part ;P I promise to be a good reader from now on though! ^_^
I find inspiration in the intermingling of different cultures and different times. The clashing conflict between heritage and modernity inspire me just as much as their peaceful coexistence. But while I love toeing the lines of tradition, I still revel in the fierce blaze of dadaistic glory. To me, inspiration is found in the mixing of origins - hybrid vigor.
Take Ivy is STILL what's inspiring me sartorially as of late but reading Mr. Porter journal entries definitely help. I love the architecture of Balenciaga's clothing and I love what Ghesquière has been doing with the label :) Thanks Lindsay for arranging this giveaway!
ReplyDeleteYou're so generous!
ReplyDeleteI've actually never really thought were my inspiration comes from. I guess there are many sources - people around me, some of the street style blogs, magazines, movies. But in general - I'm inspired by classics - Audrey Hepburn, Catherine Deneuve. Anything elegant, chic & little bit preppy.
I am inspired by architecture and quotes. I enjoy tumblr very much for that reason .
ReplyDeleteThanks for holding this giveaway. I spend a lot of time at my library in the fashion reference section.
goodness! what a gorgeous book and a lovely item for a giveaway. lately i am inspired by the textures of the platane trees lining the french concession in Shanghai. when i went to Paris last year, i saw them for the first time in all their Parisian boulevard glory. so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteIt's blogs like yours that inspire me everyday! A sweet Balenciaga book could always help too!
ReplyDeleteI'm always inspired by the colors (and color combinations) of foliage and flowers!
ReplyDeleteBalenciaga has always been my favorite fashion house hopefully I'll be able to win. Sartorially I've always been inspired by Cristobal Balenciaga's classic silhouettes, classic well cut impeccably made clothes always seem harder to come by in this day and age, and by Christian Lacroix's great use of color and patterns. I fell in love with Balenciaga and Lacroix when I was a young teenager and their wonderful contribution to fashion led to my insatiable hunger for fashion. Designers along with great women have always inspired me. Women like Jane Birkin, Francoise Hardy and Anna Karina who dressed so impeccably yet looked so nonchalantly cool. I hope the fashion world will some day resort back to the ladylike dressing of my favorite 60's icons and the classic works of old couturiers.
